In praise of older cats

Kittens are cute, but older cats still have a lot of love and purrs to give to those looking for the purrfect feline companion. Poppy and Pebbles are our Golden Girls with so much to offer who are waiting patiently for a forever home.

Sadly, the mature residents can stay with us for a while because they get overlooked in favour of kittens and younger cats, but they really do have great benefits of their own!

What you see is what you get!

Older cats have more settled personalities with fully formed characters and having got over the excitement of youth are generally much happier to sit and enjoy your company and a good fuss. These mature cats are less likely to scale the curtains or knock your ornaments off the shelf! Some adult cats can still be quite playful when they choose to be and many enjoy a few short games each day.

Older cats have learned the lessons of kittenhood and are a better choice for busy families who don’t want the hassle of supervising a young cat for long hours.

When asked about the benefits of owning an older cat, the top reasons owners gave included; the cats are calmer, they don’t want to leave the house as much and they feel like they are more of a family member.

Do take a look at Poppy and Pebbles; both are friendly, like affection and attention and dear Pebbles embraces her inner kitten with mad dashes around the house.

With advances in veterinary care, more protective and informed owners, cats can expect to live way into their teens quite happily, so taking on an older cat doesn’t mean you will have to say your goodbyes too soon; you could have many, happy years of love and fuss ahead for both of you.

Owning a ‘senior kittizen’ can be a wonderful and rewarding experience and you can be happy knowing that you have given an older feline a loving home in which to spend their retirement years, which can be fantastic for both of you.

All cats adopted from Cats Protection have been fully health-checked and come with a medical history and four weeks’ free pet insurance which also covers new conditions.
